Friday Home Fun- Groundhogs Day Activities

Come Saturday Punksatony Phil will let us know if we can expect six more weeks of winter or if spring will come early. I for one have my fingers crossed that big O' Phil doesn't see his shadow this year! Below are some fun family "hogtivities" to prepare to celebrate this fun time honored tradition.

Pop Up Punksatony Phil
Create a pop up groundhog with out a few items you may have sitting around the house.

Items Needed:
-Popsicle stick
-Glue
-Construction Paper- brown, green
-Crayons, marker
-Scissors
-Toilet Paper Roll

Create your own Punksatony Phil using construction paper and crayons. Cut him out and glue him to the top of the popsicle stick. Cover the toilet paper roll with green and or brown construction paper to create Phil's hole. When the glue has dried on your groundhog, place the popsicle stick in the top of the toilet paper roll. Push and pull the popsicle stick through the toilet paper roll to make Phil pop in and out of his hole. Walk around the house and see what rooms he can see his shadow in and which ones he cannot.

Shadow Makers
Have some fun with the entire family with this great shadow making game! Each person gets to pick two items they find in the house. Without showing anyone, take them into a dark room with a flashlight. Take turns setting the unknown items in front of the flaslight to cast a shadow on the wall. First one to guess the item wins!  Extend the shadow making fun by creating different shadow puppets on the wall. Here is a great link to a list of different shadow puppets to make on the wall.

Groundhog Hole Treats
It may look like dirt, but it sure doesn't taste like it! Everyone will enjoy this yummy groundhog hole treat!

Ingredients:
- 1 package Oreo cookies
- 1 package Vanilla Pudding
- 1 8oz. package of cream cheese
- 1 c. powdered sugar
- 1/4 c. softened butter
- 1 container of Cool Whip
- Nutter Butter Cookies or Vanilla Wafers
- Chocolate and Vanilla frosting

Place Oreos in a large zip lock bag and roll with a rolling pin until cookies are crushed into very fine crumbs. Mix pudding according to package instructions. After pudding is set gently mix in cool whip. In a separate bowl mix together cream cheese, sugar and butter until well mixed. Combine cream cheese mixture, pudding mixture and half of the crushed Oreos. Scoop into a small plastic cup or bowl and top with crushed Oreos. Using chocolate and vanilla frosting, pipe a groundhog face onto a Nutter Butter or Vanilla Wafer cookie. Place cookie in "dirt mound" to finish off this fun and festive treat!
