Friday Home Fun- Cooking in the Kitchen

It looks like the cold weather is hanging around this weekend with snow to return on Sunday! Stay warm by the stove and make some of these fun activities with your kids!

Homemade Playdough
Who needs expensive store bought playdough that dries out fast and is filled with chemicals! Make it yourself with just a few easy ingredients!

3 c of flour
1/2 c salt
6 tsp. cream of tarter
3 tbsp. vegetable oil
3 c water

Mix all ingredients into a large pan. Stir mixture constantly over a medium heat until the dough forms into a ball. Next knead the dough. Kids love to help with this part. Just make sure the mixture has cooled enough first. Knead the dough until it becomes a playdough consistency and there you have it, homemade playdough! Get creative with playdough tools! Open that kitchen drawer and pull out that old potato masher! A garlic press make fun grass or hair and a comb can make some pretty cool designs! Store playdough in a plastic container to last up to 3 months!

Homemade Bouncy Balls
Who knew you could make your own bouncy balls! The kids will get a kick out of this fun project!

You will need:
1 tsp. white glue
Food coloring
2 containers
2 craft sticks
1/2 tsp Borax
1 tbsp. corn starch
2 tbsp. water
plastic container with lid

Pour glue and food coloring into one container and mix with a craft stick. Next pour borax and water into another container and mix with second clean craft stick. Mix the cornstarch into the glue mixture. Once combined add 1/2 teaspoon of the borax mixture to the glue mix and stir together with craft stick. The mix will then become thick. At this stage you can then pour the mixture into your hand and use your hands to knead it together. Once mixed well, roll into a ball shape. After the the mixture becomes harder and less sticky it will be ready to bounce around! Store in an air tight plastic container so it doesn't dry out.

Yogurt Drops!
These quick one ingredient snacks are a fun and let the kids get creative with a healthy snack! All you need is your favorite kind of yogurt. Yogurt without large chunks of fruit work best. Fill a plastic sandwich baggie with your yogurt choice, twist around the top and snip the end off. On a flat cookie tray squeeze out little drops of yogurt and place tray in the freezer until yogurt is set. Let the kids join in and have them create their own drop shapes! They can even turn them into little animals for a fun, yummy healthy treat!

Anything Cookies
Who doesn't love a cookie for a snack and with these Anything Cookies, you can make them without even having to run to the store for special ingredients.

1 c. sugar
1 c. brown sugar
1 c. butter
2 eggs
2 c. flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. vanilla
3 c. of anything!

Mix all ingredients together and beat well. Add 3 cups of anything! This can be things like Nuts, Chocolate chips, marshmallows, dried fruit or even Crushed Cereal! Get creative and mix a cup of 3 different items together! You can even individualize the cookies and have the children create and name their own cookies! Separate the dough into thirds before mixing in your "anything ingredient". Let children fill up a 1 cup measuring cup with whatever they want to put into their cookies and then mix it in to the dough.  We'd love to hear about what kind of cookies your children created!
