Friday Home Fun- Earth Friendly Activities

In Honor of next week's curriculum theme and upcoming Earth Day on April 22nd, here are a few of our favorite early friendly activities!

Cereal Box Town
Recycle your recycling! Create this tiny town using recycled food boxes and containers.

Items needed:
Food Boxes/Containers
Paint
Consturction paper
Glue
Markers/Crayons/Colored Pencils
Scissors

Using different sizes and shapes of food containers and boxes, create different buildings by cutting doors and windows out of the containers or covering them in construction paper or paint. Glue or table these buildings to a flat piece of cardboard and draw streets and roads. This also makes for a great addition to all of those toy cars, polly pockets and barbies!

Edible Earth
Items Needed:
Rice Krispies Cereal
Butter
Marshmallows
Green and Blue Food Coloring
Water
Powdered sugar
Paint Brush

In a large saucepan melt 3 tbs. butter. Add 1 10oz pack of marshmallows and stirl until all of the marshmallows are melted. Remove from heat and add 6 cups of Rice Krispies cereal and stir until well coated. Let the mixture cool just enough so that it is cool to the touch to mold into round balls. (don't wait too long or it will become to hard to mold). Next, mix a little water with powdered sugar to make a paste and mix in green food coloring. Do the same to make a blue paste. Next, using a small paint brush, paint the Rice Krispie balls to look like like a small earth. Eat and Enjoy!

Don't forget about this fun post from last week's Friday Home Fun! If you haven't done this yet, Spring is the the best time to get those seedlings started!

Items needed:
Vegetable seeds (You can also plant herbs or flowers if you choose)
Egg Shells (You’ll need the full ½ egg shell still in tact)
Egg Carton
Potting Soil (seed starting mix works best)

Clean out the eggshells and place them in the egg carton. You’ll need to take the top of the egg carton off and only use the bottom half. With a spoon fill each egg shell with moistened soil. Place a few seeds in each shell according to the instructions for each type of seed. Place the egg carton in a window to ensure the seeds get enough sunlight to grow. Use a spray bottle to mist the soil every couple of days to make sure the seeds have water to grow.  When the seedlings are ready to plant outside, you can simply transplant them into the garden or a large pot by placing the entire eggshell into the dirt. First you’ll want to crack the bottom of the eggshell and remove a few pieces of shell on the bottom to make room for the roots to grow.  The rest of the eggshell with decompose in the soil and give the plant some extra nutrients as it grows!

Let's Get Composting!
