Friday Home Fun - Cinco De Mayo


Cinco de Mayo is a holiday that is observed in Mexico and Mexican-American communities in the U.S. to celebrate the victory over the French in the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Cinco De Mayo celebrations include large parades, yummy food and festive music! I hope these special projects help your family to to join in the festivities.





Musical Maracas
Create festive Cinco De Mayo music with these musical maracas! You’ll only need a few things you may already have laying around the house!

Items Needed:
Plastic bottle with lid
Small hard items- beans, rice, pasta, rocks, beads, etc.
Funnel
Colorful ribbons (Mexican flag colors Red, White, Green)
Glue

Using a funnel, place the small items inside of the bottle. Seal the cap tight and decorate the cap with colorful ribbons. You can tie these on the top of the bottle or glue them to the lid. Use these special maracas to join in the musical celebration!




Mini Piñatas
These mini piñatas make great party favors or activities for kids to celebrate Cinco De Mayo!

Items Needed:

Two snow cone cups
String
Decorative Supplies (paint, markers, crepe paper, sequins, etc.)
Glue/Tape
Prizes (small toys, candy or confetti)

Make holes in the bottom of each snow cone cup. Make a loop in the string and tie a large knot that will not pass through the hole inside of the cup. Pull the loop through the cup so that it is sticking out of one of the ends of the cups. Next fill the cup with the contents of your choice. Next glue or tape the second snow cone cup wide end to wide end. Once the two cups are secure, decorate the mini piñata with whatever materials you choose.

Sugar Cookie Sombreros
These cookies are not only good, but festive looking as well! Create these fun Sombrero cookies for a sweet treat on Cinco De Mayo!

Items Needed:
Sugar Cookies
White Frosting
Multi Colored sprinkles
Gum Drops

Place a small dab of frosting in the cent of the cookie and place a gum drop on the frosting to adhere it to the cookie. Next, place frosting around the outside of the cookie. Sprinkle the multicolored sprinkles on the frosting around the edge of the cookie as well as around the gum drop in the center of the cookie. These Sombrero Sugar cookies are sure to be a special treat!
